Lloyd-Georgo, President of tho Board of Trado, lias invited the chaipmen of tho principal railways to privately and informally discuss with him tho whole situation. Ho declares that ho is not acting under any powors which tho Conciliation Act confors on tho Board of Trado. Tho railway companies aro arranging a strike timo-tablo. ' ' •. The Groat Wostorn Railway Company, in a circular, asks its,clerks whether they intend to remain loyal in tho ovont of a strike, and whether thoy ' aro prepared to undertake duties outsido their, grado. Under tho Conciliation (Trade Disputes} Act, 189G, tho Board of Trade is empowered (a) to inquire into the causes of a dispute, (b) to induce tho parties to confer together with a viow'to a friendly settlement, (c) to appoint a person to net as conciliator at tho request of either party, and (d) on tho application of tho parties to appoint an arbitrator.
