Sims, of Timaru, to Miss 1 Mildred Britton, oldest daughter of the late 1 Mr. C. S. Britton, of Hastings, Hawkc's Bay. r Madame Alida Loman, the Dutch singor, f gave hor final Auckland concert at His Majosty's theatre on Saturday ovening beforo a most enthusiastic audience Mr. and Mrs. T. f Baxter, who have been on an extended visit - to Europe and Australia, have returned to r Auckland.-'.Mr. and Mrs. Peter Turnbull, i who have left Whitford for Sylvia Park, wero J ontortained at a social evening, i and presontcd with a handsomely-framed, engrossed address, together with a silver tea and coffeo service from the settlers generally. 1 CHRISTCHURCH. Mrs. Acton-Adams has left for Japan on a visit to hor daughter. Miss Aingcr also left by tho same steamer en route for England " via Japan. Miss Denniston arrived in • Christchurch last week, and is the guest of ' Mist Humphreys. On Saturday.evening Mrs. ' Arthur Rhodes gave a very pleasant "small and early" for children, and somo few grown- ' tip people. Another entertainment for the ' youthful members of society was a delightful ' children's party given by Mrs. George Gould • last "Thursday. A few days before her'marriage a delightful "book party" was/given by Mrs. Gower Burns and /the Misses Burns hi honour of Alias Boyle (Mrs. Algar Williams). The drawingroom was prettily arranged with bowls of yellow flowers, and afternoon tea was served in tho hall. Miss Boyle was the recipient of many interesting and prettilybound books. DTJNEDIN. ' On Saturday last. Dunedin, aired its spring frocks at tlio opening of tho Otago Lawn Tanuis Club for tho season. The early part of tho afternoon was bright and sunny, but later on threatening clouds came up and tho day ondod ingloriously in a down'pour of rain and hail. During tho afternoon a set of lancers was danced on the lawn. On' Saturday ovening Mrs Leslie Harm gave a bridge party at her residence, "Del Monto." On Thursday ovening Mrs. Oldham gave a pleasant little party for music and billiards at Mr.' Kempthorne's residence in Albert Street, where she is at present re3iding. On Friday ovening Mrs. Hockon gave a small bridgo party. Mrs. W. Edmond gave a progressive bridge party tho same ovening at "Mount Lodge." Miss Graco Palotta was entertained to luncheon during tho woek by Mrs. Ritchie, Mrs. Siso, and Mrs. Leslie Harris. ' Mr. and Mrs. Balfour Noill have left for Melbourne, and intend residing in Victoria. Mist. A. Wesley Turton left by Tuesday's stoamgr for Hawkc's Bay. Miss Kerr and Miss Hamilton have gone to Tasmania for a holiday trip. Mrs. Bennett (Christchurch) ib at present in town. Mrs. and the Misses Browning (Auckland) are spending a few weeks in Dunedin,'and aro staying at Wain's Hotel, Mesdames Hockon and Carew gave a mask and domino ball in tho new Art Gallery the other day, hoing the first ball held there. Tho ball-room (says the "Witness") is perfectly delightful; never beforo has Dunedin hau a floor in any way approaching it. The stage whore tho musicians were seated was' exquisitely decorated with palms, forns, and iiowors; Tho Art Gallery itself was used as a reception room, where easy chairs and lounges were arranged, and those who got tired of dancing could wander in there and eniov looking at the pictures. INVERCARGILL. Invercargill people had quite a.treat last woek, having the opportunity of seeing two of the best grand operas presented by Musgroves Grand Opera Company in tho Municipal Theatre. i .The engagement is announced of Miss Ella .birth, of Queonstown, to Mr. F. Vickerman of Invercargill. Miss Firth, who has boon on a visit to Mrs. S. E. M'Carthy, has returned to Queonstown. Mrs. P. L. Wright is at present staying m Invercargill. Mrs. Sharp and i Miss S Lays aro spending a few weeks in i Queonstown. (
