WHAT A GIRTON DEGREE COSTS.
. It is ail interesting fact that whilo tho cost of educating a girl who is'subsequently to bo presented at Court is greater than that of a boy in a similar station of life, tho parents' outlay , in bringing up a daughter who does not aspire to social distinction is less than in tl)6' c'aso of a son. According to a lady who is now a lecturer at a famous London women's college, a clover girl can get her degree in arts, after studying at Girton or Newnham, at less cost than her brother who has gono to Oxford or Cambridge. -"Up to the age of 15," she states, "I was' educated at home, beginning to loarn Latin at sovon and Greek at 10. I went to a few outside classes and had violin lessons, and at 16tlwas sent to one of, the Girls' Public Day Schools, where the moderate fees wero made lighter one-year by a scholarship. At 18 .1 studied for two terms at Bedford College for AVomen, in Baker Street, taking special classes only, with a viow to going to Girton. . ."Tlie value of'the scholarship I then won at'Girton was, I believe, £70 a'year, which reduced again the cost of my course at Girton. v. < . "At the end of three years I took my degree of 8.A., and though I did not begin to lecture at once, I thus reached at 21 an age of 'economic independence.' "Tho total foes paid by my father at Girton, after the value of my scholarship had bcen'Meducted, wore not moro than-£4O a year, but, as the terms only extended to 24 weeks, my home expenses had to bo reckoned for the remainder of the year. ; , "Although I travelled a good deal on the Continent at holiday times, I do not think that during the first "15 years of. my lifo my parents oxpended more than £1000 on my account, or during the next six years morc-than £600."
