. . -. " ■»-; •-•".- ' ■__ v , \ jA LOCAL PRODTJCTION. , , The evils arising from theimpropor feedinK ' ,of infants have denounced in every ■ .civihsed country .But, a far more'scathing . Jwf m ? ™ f "T'? hcd b y tte , infantile death-rate. ■ What this coiitinualdrain'on tho tountam of nationhood means in : tho country —apart altogether from the individual standpoint—is not fully realised outside tho' ranks ■of sociologists andi statesmen, but it ' undoubtedly constitutes a grave and ever-grow-ing menace. .Tho;' : 'difficulty.: hitherto has' •' .been,-to'provide some' effective and- unin- , jurious; nourishment. The problem, however - seems to have beeiv solved by the • introduction of humanised milk." By this process certain constituents ; of 'ordinary milk which , may tend to the dissemination.of disease are extracted, other properties'aro added, and tu .?, r 9 sult is a' preparation as near to' human ' milk as possible. Humanised milk has already r ■become remarkably popular in Amorica and £ England: One firm in 'London, tho Aylesbury '. Dairy Company, turns out art enormous quau-' T] tity, and there*are many other firms that do a great and increasing business. It is gratifying to find that the matter has also been ..■taken, up-in "Wellington. .: The Wellington ~, I'resh Eood and Ice Company, have just commencod the preparation of humanised milk; and.the preparation' is becoming remarkably popular, tho daity sales exceeding all anticipation.' Tho Company is fortunate in having . secured the supportof Dr. Mason. The Chiof Government Health Officer is aii enthusiastic believer in tho virtues of humanised milk, and' he has supplied a formula and method of preparation, which .is followed' implioitly — ■by the Company. Only milk from a specially selected herd is , usod, and the "preparation is as nearly akin'to human milk, as possible .Another point in its favour is its cheapness. It is sold at 3d. per pint bottlo, and two pints ' a day is enough for tho average infant's diet. . •
