BOWLS.

OPENiNG-OP; THOBNDON CLUB'S ftREEN. The weather wa's boisterous and*just a sh'ado on the chilly side on Saturday afternoon, .when the 'i'horndon Bowling' Club opened its green for the season. There was a large attendance of visitors, including the Hon. James. Carroll, the Hen. J. A. Millar, the Hon. J. B. ,Callan, and Messrs. - W. l'rnser and Minder, M.H.R.,. who invitation to; play-a , gamo.. u ':■■■ Promptly at 2.30 p.m .the President (Mr. James -lM'Kerrow) "opened" the green. In doing so ho stated that another year had rolled away, during which there had not been many incidents te concern them as a'club. To the death roll another ■ name, had been-added—one of, tho greatest men' and finest bowlers he had known/ Ho referred toithe lato - Dr. - Macgregor, one of-.tho best and truest men tho.:clnb had known., (Hear, hear!) During' the:year they had scoured'a piece or ground for tho'purposo of. a second bowling .green;'' There would be no play on it this'; year.'.but' next year, ho hoped to sec it an efficient' greon. The membership had increased; arid others were 'waiting. • He hoped that later on they would he able to take all those who were eligible. One matter which tho Northern Bowling' Association had asked was that more explicit .attontion should bo given to the "jack"' than; had been.:the case in the past. Very few members toolc caro how the "jack" was-used; and on inany occasions it was illegitimately handled. .The -Association asked that it should bo played in the orthodox manner, which meant that it should bo played with as as any bowl:. -The lead must stand on tho mat an dcould throw it as. far as he liked-on tho green If ho threw it into:the ditch the opposing load had the right to make the length of the rink. This rule had been disregarded;'in the past, but it was not to be so in the future. There was ono other matterUhat really only concerned the club. Thev all know that exactly a year and a wf>ek ago they had lost ono of the most painstaking and popular men that 4ver stood on a Ki-eon in Mr. Thomas Rose. Mrs. Rose, who 'had so , identified , herself with the game/had boon exceedingly magnanimous in prcsonting the club with a most valuables trophy in memory of hrr late husband. Mrs. hose had mado the presentation to tho directors; of tho club, the' only condition being that it should romain the property of the club, and never won

outright bv anyone. Ed had been speaking with Mrs. Koso that morning, and she had repeated those sentiments which he had heard Mr. Roso express bo often. The Into Mr. Koso had always held that nothing should be played for in a bowling club that would mak? anyono richer, (Hear, hear!) .Al lprizes should bo tho property of the club, and the honour of winning them for the season should satisfy all true sportsmen. These, wer ehis scntimpnts also. (Hear, hear!) Ho had nothing left to say but to throw tho "jack" and declare.the green opon.. (Applause.) , ... The Rose trophy consists of four exceedingly handsome gold badges, designed in the form of a rose/with the monogram of the club worked out below. . They arc to be awarded to the winners of the Koso rink match, to bo arranged a littlo later on. ■ : . .-.-■■ Tho following games were played .on tho plnycd:— ' . , ...■■.-.:. .
