LABOUR LEIGSLATION. (By Tolograph.—Press Association ) 1 Clirlstchurch, October 13. !At a meeting convened by tho Independent Political Laiour League, held in tho Square this afternoon, tlio following motion was earned —"That tho public citizens of Ohristchurch protest strongly against the provisions of tho Conciliation and Arbitra--1 tion Act Amendment Bill, especially tho clauses dealing with tho institution of industrial councils,, collection of fines, compulsion of non-unionists to contribute to tho funds of tho Union, and all clauses of tho Bill which interfero with the internal management of tho Union's funds, and which dictate to the Unions as to whom they aro to'have-as their officers" PRICE OF BREAD. Auckland, October 12. A meeting in committee of tho Auckland Master Bakers' Association will bo held shortly to discuss the situation jn referenco to tho advancing pneo of flour Tho present price of bread is 7d per 4-lb. loaf. Christchurch, Ocfcobor 13 , Tho master bakers, at a meeting last night, decided to increase tho pneo of bread from 6Jd. to 7d. Tlmaru, October 12. The bakers at Timaru have decided to raise ihe price of bread, from Monday next, to 7Jd and Bd. SERIOUS OFFENCES. Timaru, October 12. Two offences were committed oe the railway near Tunaru on Friday night. Tho first train north ran into a 54-lb. rail across tho track in a curved cutting a mile and a half out of town. The emergency brake was applied Just too lato to avoid hitting it. Half a mile further on., in another curved cutting, a bouHer was found on the rail. The WmEdyko Station was broken into and tho safo forced, £2 and tho stationmastor'e bicycle being stolen. Tho bicycle was recovered, having been left by tho thief at Caroline, Bay. No clue has been discovered. HEART'DISEASE. Auckland, October 12. Edward Roberts, i aged abouj; forty years, was picked up by the police in Lower Queen Street this and, as he appeared to bo sononsly ill, a constable convoyed him to the District Hospital, where ho died half-an-hour after admission. A certificate from Dr. Hooper waß found m Robert's possession statimg that ho was suffering from heart disease. , Y.ILCJI. \ Auckland, October 12. The amount raised on Saturday in connection" with tho Y.M.C.A. Building Campaign was £920 19s , inoluding.a donation of £500 from an anonymous giver, £150 from Mr. T Peacock, and £100 from Mr. H. M. Smcoton. This brings tho total up to £7675, exclusive,of the estimated proceeds from tho salo of the old bunding. / • ' A MAN DROWNED. Chrlstchurch, October 13. A man named Michael Henry was drowned off the Lyttolton dredgo hto last nights or early morning. I , • NEWS IN'BRIEF. Nelson,.October 12. The weather continues wintry, with tropical rain, enow, hail and slcotj and 7 thunder. During the thunderstorm a bull at Takaka, owned by Mr. James Page, was struck by lightning It was running loose, and was found dead, having lam down by a wiro fence which was splmtored by lightning, the wires touching the carcase. Westport, October 12. Tho Westport Coal Company's output for the week was 7224 tons 1 cwt. Christchurch ,October 12. Tho annual meeting of tho Canterbury Central Co-operative Dairy Company was held this afternoon, and was well attended The balance-sheet showed a balance to credit ion proiit and loss account of £5144.
