A man who was arrested for attempted 'murder at Elwood, New Jersey, was confined in a railway van on a. siding, because Elwood has no prison. A trail' pickcd up the van in the mi:ht, and the piisoncr has not since been Heard of. During the harvest on Mr. W. Harris's farm at L.iindoiv; Essex, recently, a labourer- named Stewart billed a rat which measured 19in; from nose to tail. It was very ferocious, and showed fight, before it was destroyed-
