Scutching and pressing machines aTe being erected, and twenty carpenters wero at work yesterday erecting a largo fibre shed to receive the reconditioned hemp, ■ whilo other buildings are •to be erected for tho scutching and baling. Tho buildings will liavo tho electric light installed so that the work of reconditioning iriay ; bo carried through as quickly 6s possible. ,It ..is intended to work night and day! Tho plant, and buildings will constitute practically a new mill, except for the fact that no green flax will be handled. This new industry, so closo to "Wellington, is a matter of some importance, for it will absorb a considerable amount of skilled and unskilled labour. While the works aro. going it is expected that about seventy hands will ■bo employed continuously, and the pity is that it is only a temporary job. " Mr. Scotclier, general manager for Sir. M. P. Bourke, who has the contract for reconditioning the hemp, arrived from Auckland a day or two ago to,take charge of the works.
