In the Legislative Council yesterday leavo of absence for . one \reok. was granted to tho Hon. Colonol Feldwiefe on important public business. 'Miss-Eila Williams, who returned by tho Arawa 011 Thursday from an extended visit to England And the Continent, loft last oight for Cliristchurch to attend tho wedding of Mr. Algar Wilinms. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Williams, of Masterton, have also gone to Christchurch.. Mr. F. Rogen, the woll-known breeder of prize, poultry, returned from a trip to . England by the Arawa on Thursday. Ho is still a keen fancier, and- brought some rare birds back with him, . including some prize turkeys, which woro for a Molboumo breedor, and wero landed at Hobart, Mr. C. M. Montfiore, tho manager of 'tho Ocean Accident Insurance Company, had the niisfortuno to injure his loft knee rather severely last Week. ■ Ho was riding on horseback down Adelaide Road, when, lio was jammed hard against n vehicle. He is now able to get about on orutches, and is; progressing towards a complete, recovery .
Among tho visitors to Wellington at present is Mr. Alexander Hume Ford, an American author and journalist,V who is touring the Dominion, ill search \ of colour and diversion. Mr. Ford had an article in the latest "Appleton'B Magazine," entitled "Our American Adriatic," dealing with,,the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Ford is a friend of Mr. Jack London's, the popular novelist, who, our visitor says, is about to pay Now Zealand a visit in his own yacht. When last heard of Mr. London was at Honolulu, and he would not be surprised to see him turn up hero at any time. A private cable message has been receiv'od in Nelson 'announcing the death by accident in Vancouver of Mr. Hu- ' berfc Morton,. a son 'of the lata; Mr. Ramsay Morton, and n former pupil of Nelson College. The. deceased was on his way back to Now Zealand from Europe. His mother lives, in Auckland, and au aunt, Mrs. Lightfoot, is a resident of Nelson. No further particulars have beon received. Mr. Aves, the British' Commissioner who is makiug 'Inquiries about social and political affaird in Now' Zealand,' has returned' to Wellington from the South.' .' ;' - . • Mr. W. H. Cordeaux, of the Commercial Banking Company, Sydney, ia a visitor to Wellington. Ho leaves for Auckland this morning, and will return South via the Wanganui River, and - later on is to tour the South Island
