UNIVERSAL DEFENSIVE TRAINING. ' REFERENDUM PROPOSED. Christchurch, October 8. Captain M'Nauglit, organiser of tho National Jjonguo, who is at present in (Jhristchurch, informed a reporter tonight that it was possible that before the closo of noxt Bossion a petition would bo presented to Parliament asking that a referendum bo taken on tho question whether or not a system of universal defensive training should bo adopted. If tho of the' referendum was in favour of tho proposal legislation would bo introduced to givo effect to the will of tho poople. INSANITARY NEWMARKET.
DR. PURDY'S CRITICISMS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, October 8. Dr. Purely, Health'Oflicor, in a very strong, report on tho sanitation of Newmarket, described it as'the worst place in New Zealand, and ho would have to seriously consider whether ho should not ask somo religious body in tho borough to preach a sermon on the subject. Ho mentioned having found a lobster in the main street, and despite the promise mado by the chairman of-the Borough Council that tho streets would bo swept three days a week. Dr. Purdy said they should he swept every day, ndding: " I shall have to come along and sweep them myself." Tho Council decided to prosecute. without warning anybody sweeping rubbish on the streets. , '
