LATEST BOOKS (These books can be obtained from all booksellers.) ‘■Dark Lady,” by Gavin. Holt (our copy from Hodder and Stoughton, Ltd., Sydney), tells of David Remm, a young composer, who seeks a rest cure in an old-world spot in Cornwall. The only other passenger to his destination is a very beautiful dark lady. David’s efforts at acquaintanceship are met very coldly and the ladyshows a distaste for his presence. On his arrival at bis lonely cottage he becomes involved in some mysterious happenings and the dark lady again crosses his path. The lady is living at an old mansion nearby and is taking a leading part in a plot to sustain a monarchy in a small state in the Balkans. David is mistaken for an

up-to-date American gangster who is to assist in thwarting the lady and he becomes the centre of a hectic plot and many adventures come his way before the plot explodes prematurely, removing one of the villains, and restoring- David to the lady’s favour. The story is well told and holds the in terest throughout.
