NEW RESUSCITATORY METHOD.
A new method of resuscitating the apparently drowned is being Investigated by the medical department of the British Admiralty. It is described as an application of jiu-jitsu principles, and appears to have much to commend it on account of its simplicity, particularly in the way in which water Is drained from the mouth of the rescued person (reports the “Daily Mail”). Respiration is induced by means totally different from those in common use—the Silvester method, in which the lungs are mechanically operated by waving the patient’s arms, and the Schafer mode, in which pressure Is applied to the back. Mr. Norman Pogose, of Plorenceroad, Ealing, London, Is the inventor of the new method. In a demonstration he showed that, as in jiu jitsu, the automatic or reflex, actions of the muscles are brought into use by pressure applied at certain anatomical points. By pressing on the phrenic nerve, situated behind the collar-bone, it is claimed that the action of the heart and lungs can be stimulated.
