WHAT IS A GOOD CALF?

A man who knows even a little about cattle will generally recognise a good animal from a bad one (says the “Livestock Journal”). The difference in appearance when the animals are brought together is striking. Nevertheless, there are many instances where the novice will hardly distinguish between a really good doer and an indifferent thriver. With young calves It is sometimes harder to discriminate between the good and the less good, especially when dealing with mixed breeds. Young calves are bought to rear, either as young store cattle or young cows. It is, Indeed, a bit of a lottery to bring a purchased calf into the dairy herd when two or three years old if nothing is known as to the parentage of the calf, which is very likely the case. Yet a good judge of cattle is rarely deceived, for the animal when a year or a year and a half old, will very probably show from its general appearance whether It will become a useful cow or not.
