The Kawarau Field

j EARLY YIELDS MAINTAINED | VISITORS STILL NCM FROL'S, i I'm' most pleasing feature in connection with the Kawarau find is that the early returns which made the field J anions throughout the Dominion nave, it anything, been exceeded during the last week’s operations. In the tunnel of Messrs Bell and Kilgour, the record gold producer so far, very rich wash lias been worked, with no sign ol the gold cutting out or the lead being crossed. if is fairly reliably reported that on two days v;s( week the daily yield was in tin l vicinity ol ten ounces without the miners in any wav exerting themselves. One particular prospect is said to have been slightly over three ounces. There is as yet no pronounced dip in tile bottom, athongli a slight depression is occasionally met with. Some of the gold is of a heavy nature, with occasional pieces studded with quartz. Late in the week three different dishes each yielded an ounce. \ cry gratifying is the report that Messrs Bell and Hooper Bros, in the adjoining tunnel. have now struck verv rich ground also, and their daily v 10Id is said to be approaching that obtained in the other tunnel. It is significant that while both tunnels start from almost the same line on the irontage, the one under notice is extended almost a hundred feet further towards the flat. If this is correct, and recent returns are considered. it would seem that the lead extends at a slight angle from the river into the flat. As far as it has been 'tested, the lead, for its richness, is one of the widest ever known in this district. Both funnels seem to have disclosed a very wide area of rich wash.

In Messrs Bell anTl party's sluicing claim highly satisfactory returns continue. At present the miners arc ‘disposing ol' a heavy deposit of the overburden, to lay bare another area of wash. It would he no surprise to find this concern unearthing highly payable ground at any time.
