Disastrous Earthquake
The West Coast of the South Island was swept on Monday last by one ot the most disastrous earthquakes in the historv of the Dominion. Thirteen lives were lost. Through the dailv press the public are fully conversant with the tragic details. *or the latest news, by wireless, we are indebted to Mr D. A. Cahill. Late news from Westport .states that the Maruia river will in all probability cut through the slip in about three' days. A constant watch is being- kept" to advise Westport. The Matakitaki river is keeping the same level and it is anticipated that a permanent lake will be formed in the Matakitaki Valley. Mr H. Atmore M.P., has done a great deal of work, committees being formed i» each district to keep in touch with the Government! tor the restoration of the devastated areas. Messrs Furkert and May are busy inspecting all roads and bridges and road communication will be pushed on immediately. During an address by Mr H. Atmore at Murchison, some very loud detonations were heard, and. one violent shock took place. Rumbling and minor shocks take place all day. • *\t Takaka, Nelson, some very sharp shocks are being felt and the hilltop 13 not visible for steam. . The latest from' Murchison. last night announces the position unchanged. Slight tremors still continue and rain has again set in.
