THE KAWARAU DAM.
CLOSING SATURDAY OR MONDAY. Information from semi-official quarters in Dunedin on Friday was to the effect that the Kawarau Dam would be closed on Saturday, 28th inst., or Monday, 80th. Nothing further was heard in the interval. We communicated by telephone this morning with a leading member of the Kawarau Company's directorate, and the statement was confirmed. Arrangements with the Government have been eatisfactorily adjusted. The directors will hold a meeting in Dunedin to-day, when the definite day will be fixed. The decision will not be arrived at until after the issue of the ARGUS, but the directors have kindly agreed to advise us by telegram immediately the meeting is concluded. The date will be posted at our office. Coming so close to our hour of publication, we are unable to touch further on the realisation of the great undertaking. The Kawarau river rose two feet on Saturday as a result of mild rain, but yesterday the weather was cold, and with snow on the mountains and light frosts the river to-day is only a foot above last week's low level. With settled weather it will quickly recede.
