Cromwell Argus. AND NORTHERN GOLDFIELE GAZETTE. Cromwell, Monday, Oct 13, 1919

Mr J. J. and J. A. O'Raue, surgeon dentists, visit the Upper Clutha centres ou October 23rd and 21th. A meeting of ladies, in connection with the fire-brigade and band bazaar, will be hcl 1 at the Fire Brigade Station on Wednesday evening at 7.30 p m. Our Wanvka correspondent writes that there is a considerable amount of sickness in the district, including one ease of diphtheria at Pembroke. Miss Frcida Robertson announces that she is prepared to receive pupils for the pianoforte. In her examinations Miss Robertson passed with very high honors. The Methodist Church Sunday-School will give the annual entertainment in the hall ou Saturday, 35th October. Last year the children presented a splendid programme, but this year’s is said to eclipse their previous efforts. On Thursday evening, in the Methodist Church. Uc annual Home Mission meeting will be hold. Rev. B F. Rothwcll, chairman of the Otago district, is to speak on his work among the Maoris, and also on the Maori Wars. A number of musical items will also be given, and a collection taken up on behalf of the Home Mission Fund. The weather last week was seasonable, with bright sunny days, and warm winds. This had the effect of removing the snow from the higher levels, thereby minimising the anxiety of orchardists regarding late frosts. So far little damage to fruit crops is reported, but the position in regard to the pastoral country is still causing sheep men some concern. Losses of stock are inevitable. Rain has been falling since early this morning. The Rise and Shine Gold Dredging Company has disposed of the No if dredge, and we understand the machine goes to a foreign field. With only one machine now at work the company should have a long run on the area of ground available. Recently the No I struck very deep ground near the top boundary, and returns showed a decided falling-off. L'o-day the crew is engaged dropping the michinc down stream some distance and will take up a cut on the east side. As far as can be judged from previous su'ts, the machine should do well. Mr M. L. Spratt and family arc to be entertained by the residents of Lowburn district at a farewell soci il next Fridaj r evening. During their long residence at Lowburn, Mr Spratt and family hive proved highly-esteemed and respected citizens, closely associated with all local functions, and liberal to any deserving cause. While the residents regret their departure, they intend to extend an appropriate appreciation and token of goodwill. The new proprietor of the Welome Home, Mr Tisdall, enters into possession this week. We think the borough council would bo jus'ificd in making use of tlie local pmu i, regmlless of cost. This morning we were beseiged with complaints from ratepayers, regarding a team of ten draught horses wandering in the streets throughout Sunday and until an early hour this morning, The team were in the main street until late in the evcuhig. Afterwards they found their way outback, and among other annoyances, invaded the tennis grounds. It seems a mystery that the trouble canuot be suppressed.

We remind residents of the district of the meeting to bo held nest Saturday evening at Bannockburn, to consider forming a bowling club and laying down a green. Such a proposal should m'et with very general approval, and if the residents co’opeiale they should have uo difficulty in making the necessary pro vision. A few good sports in that centre can be depended on to give the movement a push along. Later we are informed that a tennis court is also to be provided, and with that in view ladies are specially invited to Saturday’s meeting. Mr Hull was greeted with a packed house at his weekly picture entertainment on Friday evening, and the large audience was well pleased with the programme. For Ibis week, Mr Hull has a great Vitagraph masterpiece, “ The Magnificent Meddler,” starring Antonio Moreno and Mary Anderson. It is a bright, breezy story, full of thrilling incidents, and s nsatioual passages. Excellent supports accompany the film, including ibe sixth episode of (he serial “ The Scarlet Eunncr.” A meeting of the committee of the Cromwell Horticultural and Industrial Society was held on Friday evening, Mr Brodrick presiding. The following judges have consented to act : —Flowers and vegetables. Mr Hamel ; decorative work, Mrs Hamel ; fruit, Mr Thorp It was decided to secure (he Oddfellows Hall for the display of decorative work. Rule VIII, was amended as follows : NTo exhibit in section 7, which has previously gained a prize, will be allowed to compete a second time in that class. The secretary was iustructel to procure a supply of vases, to be hired by exhibitors at a small charge ou the day of the show. —- The great railway strike in England ended somewhat suddenly, on acceptable terms to both sides, aud work was re> * timed last Monday.
