Mr James Smith’s (Greenfield) vigorous indictment of the large landowner who ignored his responsibilities to the community was (says the- “ Free Press ” ) heartily applauded at the meeting of shareholders in the South Otago Freezing Company. It is quite on the cards that a more vigorous land settlement policy will be inaugurated by the Government before long, and when the proper time arrives strong representations should be made from Clutha to have the remaining large estates in the neighborhood purchased by the Gov* eminent and subdivided. Only through the medium of closer settlement will Balclufcha’s hopes of becoming a large centre be realised, and as Mr Smith so ably pointed out, we need not go far for an object lesson as to the benefit to the whole community from the ‘ bursting-up ’ policy. But for the measure of closer settlement accomplished within the past few years there would have been no freezer, nor any talk of one.
