In America there are match-making syndicates, and marriages are arrang-, ed between heiresses and titled Englishmen as well as foreigners. There is In existence an organisation established solely for supplying information concerning American heiresses to impecunious noblemen, telling of the amount of their fortune, how it was made, as much as Is known of the lady’s ancestry, her relatives, her age, height, appearance, temper ; even the size of her hands and feet is given. There are branches of this bureau all over Europe ; the head-* quarters are reported to be in Berlin.—’“World.” To restore the gloss to dull-looking goloshes, rub the latter with a piece of black cloth dipped in oil. This will nourish the over-shoe and keep it from cracking, as well as give the desired polish. For frying, the same dripping, or clarified fat may be used a long time. When it becomes brown and mixed with sediment place it in an iron saucepan, let it heat till a steam rises, have ready a deep basin containing hot water, pour the fat hot into this very little at a time, to prevent it flying up, stir well. HAND RULES, j The use and abuse of hands should be written up. It would teach many things. Here are some hand rules selected at random Don’t sit with your thumbs doubled up ; it makes the thumb joints large. Don’t use your teeth upon your fingers, for it loosens the flesh at the side of the nail, and makes the fingers stubby. Don’t fiddle with your finger tips. Don’t strain your hands by driving in pins or tacks, or by using them roughly ; you will surely spoil their shape. Don’t pull your fingers. Don’t bend your fingers backwards.
