THIS DAY. The touring Otago footballers were defeated by Wellington by nineteen points to six. Auckland, after a rough game, defeated Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield by six to four. Canterbury were leading by one point till near the close of the game. In Association football Auckland beat Wellington for the Brown Challenge Shield by two goals to nil. In local games the Northern team won the Charity Banner for the fifth time in succession, defeating Eavensbourne by four goals to three. The hockey match Otago v Canterbury ended in a draw, the score being two goals each. A good deal of rain fell this morning. At the inquest held on John Fergus, 49 years of age, who expired while in the champagne bath, the medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to carbonic acid poisoning accelerated by a week heart. Although a match would burn within two inches of the water, it was not wise for people with weak hearts to use this bath. The father of the late Michael Quirk who was shot at Palmerston North during the Pawelka scare, is petitioning parliament for an inquiry and asking for compensation.
