ZINC AS iE T ERTILISEE. A French ahemist lias shown tihat zinc exists in about fifty plants belonging *0 widely separated botanical families. He made a special study of species of mould containing zinc, and found that tihe metal plays a very important part in the life of the plant, a trace of zinc being indispensable to its growth and development. Th'2 addition to a culture medium of one ten-milliontih part of the element increases the growth thrtv or four times, and even one fifty-millionth exerts an appreciable influence. Similar investigations on the metal manganese in plants ba,ve already led to the use of this substance in agriculture as what is called a " eomphmenfcary fertiliser" with brilliant success.
