HOUSEHOLD HINTS. Sauoep&ns should be a* fiat and broad as possible, so fchat ae aeat may ba wasted. When windows are difficult to open or close, rub the cords with soft soap, when they will run smoothly. To keep cream «weet, add a little '. white sugar to your cream and heat ! it slowly, and it will keep for a long j time. ] Always keep a lemon ©n the washstand. It will prevent the skin forming round the halfmoons at the base of the nails, and keep the lat- : ter in good condition. i When the colour has been taken out j of a silk dress in soma places by a ! splash of acid, it may be restored ! by applying to the spot a little sal ! volatile. An inexpensive disinfectant for a , sick room can be made as follows. j Put some ground cofiee in a saucer i and in the middle place a small piece j of camphor gum ; light the gum with 1 a match. As the gum allows the coffee to burn with it the smell is I most refreshing and healthful. Spots of oil which may have been dropped accidentally on leathercovered chairs can often be removed by means of a paste of fuller's earth and water. This should be spread over the leather and left until the paste is perfectly dry, when the powder should be removed with a stiff brush. To clean mirrors.—Rinse a soft sponge in warm water and afterwards in spirits of wine. Clean the looking-glass carefully with this ; then tie some powdered blue in a muslin bag, dust a little on the glass and rub off lightly with a very soft "cloth. Polish finally with an old silk handkerchief. One often hears complaints that the washhouse boiler rusts and ironmoulds the clothes. To prevent this, rub the boiler directly it is emptied, and while still hot, with any good household soap. Give it a good coating of soap, which will not only prevent rust, but will also help to make the necessary suds when the boiler is filled with water for the next washing. THE DRESSMAKER.
