CLAIMS OF LAKE WAXAKA. Messrs Fraser anil Sidey, M.P.'s, waited upon the Hon. Thus Mackenzie on Friday morning regarding a small grant for the Domain Board at Lake Wanaka. Mr Fraser said the residents there felt that Wanaka had been somewhat neglected. It was a very beautiful place, and tourists who had gone there thought a great deal of it He suggested that a sum of £l5O should he placed on the Estimates for track-making and beautifyin" purposes. There was a Domain Board in connection with the island in in the lake, but the hoard had no funds. Mr Sidey, as one who had visited Wanaka. spoke of its scenic attractions, and asked what were the prospects of the establishment of a motor service from Clyde to Pembroke, r.o that tourists could make the trip from Dunedin in one day. Such a service would be availed of also by Dunedin residents. Mr Mackenzie said he had been sorry to learn when he was last at Pembroke that the island had been swept by lire. It was a question whether it should he replanted or whether it would bo better to allow, the natural vegetation to recover. There was a grant of £SO last year. K £IOO would do any good ho would be very glad to recommend such a grant. It was, however, just a question whether the result would justify such an expenditure. There was one spot where a stream' came in beyond the hotel* where some beautifying might "be done. He luul authorised the erection of a hut near the foot of Mount Aspiring. In reyard to the motor service, there was a difficulty about leaving out Havvea. It was necessary to take the mails there, and that would make the journey longer. Nothing definite had developed in connection with private enterprise, although he had heard that a company was prepared to put on motors If so, he would help them all he could within reason. Mr Wigley, who had made such a success of the Mount Cook service, was anxious to get a subsidy for a connection from Pukaki to Pembroke, but at present that was a little premature. The Government had not been going in for many subsidies lately, because the money had not been available. It was paying a subsidy of £soo for the Mount Cook service just now. The tenders received lor the Glyde-Wanaka service hud not been, satisfactory.
