LADIES' COLUMN.
TOMATO KETCHUP. To i gallon tomato juice, strained, add 1 tablespoon salt, \ tablespoon each of whole spices (put in a bag), J teaspoon cayenne, 1 cup sugar, 1 pint vinegar. Boil until thick as desired. Seal when hot. BROWN SUGAR CANDY. Two cups brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, butter size of egg, 2 cups of milk. Boil until it hardens in cold water. Be careful and not let it burn when nearly done (it is very apt to), then add teaspoon vanilla and cup of chopped walnuts, and beat until it is stiff. It will change to a lighter colour when ready to pour into tin. FLUSH YOUR PIPES. A frequent flushing of pipes with hot soda water will free them from clogging and from grease, the cause of clogging. This precaution may save sickness in the house brought by bad smells. Such a bad drain pipe has power to taint food in the house, and to bring on sickness from this reason. DARNING STOCKINGS. To darn black stockings,, place a square of black net under the rent and darn in and out of the muscles. The work can he done with greater speed, and is far stronger and more easily done than in the usual way. THE DRESSMAKER.
MAKING NEEDLES. A coil of fine steel wire is first run into an elaborate machine, and cut into pieces the length of two needles. These lengths are gathered into little bundles, and each end of the wire is sharpened at the rate of hundreds a minute by being pressed against a grindstone. Two eyes are next stamped in the centre of the wire, which is then broken in halt, forming two needles. At this stage the needles are still soft wire and need hardening, so they are soaked in a bath of hot oil, and, when cool again are quite hard and brittle. Then follows the polishing process, when, done up in bundles of thousands, the needles are continually rolled in sand for a period of seven days, coming forth from the process with a fine polish. 1715.
