Railway Efficiency. Evidence of Engine Failures. An excellent testimonial to the care taken in keeping rolling stock in good order on ibe New Zealand Railways is proved in a return of engine failures quoted by the Minister for Railways in an annual statement. With some railways an engine run of 5000 miles without a failure is considered satisfactory, while others set up 16,000 miles per failure as the standard for passenger engines. New Zealand railway engines have given the following excellent results for the year 1908 9 ; 21,462 engine miles for each failure on the Wellington Napier New Plymouth line and 69,591 engine miles for each failure on the Hurunui-Bluff section. During the years 1909-10 there were no failures on the K tihu section. 26,766 miles were run for each failure on the Kawukawa section ; 15,962 miles for each failure on the Wbangarei section ; 27,274 miles for each failure on the Gisborne section ; 85.344 for each failure mi the North Island main trunk line ; 127,272 miles for each failure on the South Island main trunk line and branches ; 18,168 miles for each failure on the Picton section ; 38,678 miles for each failure on the Nelson section ; 209,882 miles for each failure on the Westport section, and 26.645 miles for each failure on the Westland section. Taking the whole railway system, 48,990 miles were run for every engine failure that occurred. .Judged on Ibis basis adopted by American roads it must be conceded that New Z aland results, which include every failure occurring to engines employed in the running of train services irrespective of the period of train delay, constitute a very good record
