FOOTBALL.

[By " Goal Post."] MANIOTOTO v. VINCENT. TUe above match, one of ike " Country Week " fixtures, was played iu Dunedin on Wednesday last, in ideal weather. Since the inauguration of country week, and for many years previous, the name of Vincent was something to ponder on in football circles as far as the country teams are concerned, but the game under notice brought the downfall of the Greens, the first, excepting against Otago at Clyde last season, for many years. Weak as A r incent were acknowledged to be, supporters generally expected a vic- : tory and this seemed more likely in the early stages of the game. From the kick off the Greens attacked and Jolly scored after a good run. The pressure was maintained and only faulty passing spoilt three good chances. For the first ten minutes the Greens had things their own way ; but then the scene changed and Maniototo's heavy forwards took charge and seldom for the rest of the game did the greens backs get a chance. Fast forward work by the colors pack led up to 11 .elm scoring, and the try was converted. At half time Maniototo had a lead of two points. The second spell had just commenced when another forward rush let Huddlestone in and Vincent's hope seemed small, as Patterson landed a fine goal. At this stage C. Davidson had to retire, and his place was filled by 11. Thomas. Time was nearing when a fine run by Thomas led up to Foster scoring, but Varcoe failed with the kick. Just before the final whistle a similar effort let Crawford over, and a goal meant victory, but Varcoe failed, and time sounded with the score, .Maniototo 10, Vincent i).

The exhibition of the Greens was generally execrable, the-forwards playing with little dash and no combination. The backs at times let down miserably, but showed a little old time form in theearly stages. On the day's play the best team won, but Vincent's form was far below its capabilities.
