Matiki, a foreigner in charge of the giraffe at Wirth's circus, was fined live pounds and costs lor biting the finger of a country visitor. l3is fellow 7 employees paid the fine. In Saturday’s cricket Albion scored 09 against Carisbrook A, and the latter made 210 for one wicket. Blamires made 110 and Watson 09, both not out.
Lady Piunket gave birth to a son on Saturday. Mother and son are both progressing satisfactorily. Thirty acres of Forbury, Park have been purchased by the Tahuna. Park Trotting Club, the price being £6,250. At Invercargill three men were charged with having fired a shot through the window of a bushman’s house at Rimu. The defendants tried to prove an alibi, but the magistrate said there must be a nest of liars at Rimu, and it was a question of which of the two sides to believe. It was one for a jury, so the accused were committed for trial.
At the inquest at Christchurch on the body of Ernest Thomas Saunders a verdict was returned that deceased died from epilepsy, accelerated by a blow on tho head struck by Alex* auder Kidney on January 20. * Kiddey was thereupon taken into custody oa a charge ot manslaughter. The State school at Addington, near Christchurch, was destroyed by fire oa Friday night.
Tho Minister for Railways, the lion. J. A. Millar, states Sir J. G. Ward in laying down a three per cent policy as a return on the railways based his calculations on the rate of interest on loans at the time prevailing. New Zealand has now to pay a half per cent more and a corresponding increase had to be looked for from the

Sub-inspector Dwyer has been pro. moled to the position of police inspect tor at Napier. Detective M‘Grath is promoted to Sub-Inspector, and Sergeant Hendry, of Auckland as another Sub-inspector. Detective Broberg is made Chief Detective.
Charles Adam Mason, of Pnreau, while milking on Saturday and talking with his wife, fell forward and expired. Death was due to heart disease.
During the week 23 dredges reported returns amounting to 609 ounces, Rising Sun, with 70/10, heading the list.
