IF YOU ENTERTAIN THE KING.

Those who are ambitious of the honour of a Royal visit nowadays must be prepared for something like complete internal reconstruction of their houses, if it should be considered advisable by the experts who are sent down weeks before hand to make a thorough inspection. Royal personages cannot be expected to be continually altering their ordinary manner of life as they go from one mansion to another, and so, everything must be done by their entertainers to make the difference of environment as little perceptible as possible. A large suite of rooms, practicably a separate fiat, must be set apart, to which a private garden is often attached, if there is not already a Royal suite in the mansion ; and further suites must be provided for the members of the household in attendance.

The King and Queen bring their own body-servants, who wait on them at table, and it is usual for his Majesty to be served with his own particular wine from his own cellars. The entertainers, of course, receive every assistance from Lord Knollys, and others of the suite who understand the tastes of their Majesties.

The menus are all settled beforehand ; and their Majesties exercise a rigid censorship over the list of the house-party who are to have the honour of meeting them.
