THIS DAY. The results of Saturday’s football matches were as follows ;—Southern and University drew with 6 points each. Alhambra beat Pirates, sto 8. Kaikorai beat Taieri, 11 tr. nil. Port beat Dunedin, 3 to nil. Zingari beat Union, 12 to nil. The grounds were all very greasy. New South Wales beat Queensland by 11 to 3. The weather on Friday night was the coldest experienced for about ten years. The man named Tutt, who has been for some years cook in the employ of the Union Company, has been let off with a fine of £5 on the the charge of stealing £4 10a from a mate. A fire at Mataura destroyed four shops belonging to John Lowden. There was only small insurances on the buildings. At Stratford, on Friday night, they had the largest flood ever experienced there, between three and four inches of rain falling in about two hours. In a speech at Stratford, Mr M'Nab, Minister of Lands, announced that it was intended to effect the limitation of estates by putting on a heavy graduated tax. The Government has decided to take over Culverden Estate, Canterbury, consisting of about 20,000 acres.
As eight Maoris left for Nelson in an oil launch, the engine was discovered to be leaky, and on a lantern being taken to examine the leak, a fire broke out. The Maoris jumped overboard, and although only three chains from the land, a man, woman, and a boy were drowned. Nothing definite is yet ascertained concerning the number of lives lost by the wreck of the Kia Ora. Twentyseven were saved and three are known to be drowned, but several adult passengers are still unaccounted for. Dredging returns total 763/12/15, Gold King being at the head of the list with 61/7/16. R. J. Sutherland, a fisherman near Otago Heads, is supposed to hare been drowned, as hia boat has been found without any trace of him.
CABLE NEWS. London, June 15. The Russian Premier has demanded the suspension of 40 deputies and the arrest of 16 others, pending an inquiry regarding a plot to overthrow the present system of government and replace it by a demoeratic republic. Mr L. Botha, the Transvaal Premier, announced that it was intended to return to China nearly 17,000 coollies. The British Premier has given notice of a resolution that in order to give effect to the will of the people, it is necessary that the power of the House of Lords to alter, or reject bills be so restricted as to secure that within the limits of a single parliament, the final decision of the House of Commons shall prevail.
The Hon. F. S. Jackson will captain the cricket team which intends to visit Australia. H. J. Rcckitt, ox-member of the House of Commons, has been divorced, the evidedee showing revolting immorality. The International chess championship, at Ostcnd, was won by Tarrascb. The Japanese at San Francisco are claiming damages from the municipality for losses through attacks on their restaurants.
INTERCOLONIAL. Adelaide, June 15. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward were taken ashore at Adelaide, where they were welcomed by the Premier and Mayor, and afterwards lunched with the State Governor.
