THIS DAY. The hearing of the charge of manslaughter against J. R. Hayne, chemist, has been fixed for Thursday next. The Farmer's Union in various parts of the colony are protesting against the Land Bill. Police raided Hotel Metropole, St. Clair, and found a five gallon keg of beer in the stable near the hotel. Lionel Terry made his escape again on Saturday night from Sunnyside mental hospital. He forced open the window and made his way to tho ground, a distance of twenty feet, by a rope made of bed clothes. He had only his night garments on at the time. News received from Kaiapoi states that a man dressed in white trousers and shirt, and supposed to be a lunatic, was seen in the river bed of Waimakariri about mid-day. Robert David Robinson, station manager in Hawke's Bay, was found dead in a hut with his throat cut from ear to ear, with a razor alongside the body. Wi Parata, ex-M.H.R., and the wealthiest Maori chief on the West Coast, died at Waikanae on Saturday, as a result of an accident. When mounting his horse he fell right over the other side on his head. He leaves a large family. It is thought a Bill may be introduced giving holders of small grazing runs valuation for improvements so ;is to encourage them to re-grass the country. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones visited Canterbury to o[>cn a bridge over the Cust River. The Hon G. Fowlds, in speaking tit the opening of a new technical school, at Wanganui, said he was opposed to centralisation in education matters, and would hesitate to endorse any proposal that would minimise the interests of the people in educational matters. Meeting in Sydney, on Saturday, the results were—Hurdles, Hydrant; Derby, Poisedon 1, Collarit 2, Antonious 3 ; G. G. Stead's colt Huascar was last; Epsom Handicap, Maximise 1, Famous 2, Lord Fitzroy 3; Spring Stakes, Lady Wallace 1, Isolt 2, Dividend 3.
