Sporting Notes.

[By Slow Tom.]

The programme committee of the Cromwell Jockey Club have the programme ready to submit to a meeting on Thursday night. I have been informed that they could not report favorably re having a Derby this year, but will recommend it for the following year. As quite a number of young horses are bred in the interior now it is almost certain to be a success. The secretary of the Cromwell J.O. has received the following letter from a well-known racing man of Naseby, and as it is of interest in connection with the placing of a Derby on the programme I have been permitted to take a copy, which is as follows : Naseby, Aug. 31st, 'O6. " I saw by the Argus that your club are talking about putting a Derby on your programme* If they decide on doing so there is one thing I would like to draw your attention to in framing the conditions, and that is re horses bred in the district. Under the old conditions of the Derby, they had to be foaled in the district, but as we have four splendid mares here in Aileen, Ethel, Phryne and Opportunity, three of these mares have foals that were born out of this district last year, but are being reared here. They are also in foal again, and will be sent away to Oamaru for service again this year. It is to be hoped you will again have the Derby on your programme, and it is almost certain to have a good effect on the breeding of horses in our districts, and I am sure your club will so frame the conditions of the race so as to allow these youngsters I mention to be eligible." Jack Perriam is driving Georgie M. about, she is much quieter, and will now go in open bridle. She stands quietly in the trap. Good nominations are reported to have been received by the Vincent Jockey Club for the events that closed last week, the number being, twelve for the Matakanui Handicap, and 26 for the New Year Trot. The N.Z. Trotting Association removed the disqualification from the trotting men and horses that took part in the event at the last meeting at Pembroke.
