The Cromwell Argus AND NORTHERN GOLDFIELDS GAZETTE Cromwell, Monday, May 7, 1906.
It is necessary, if possible, to remove some wrong THE OTAGO impressions CENTRAL RAILWAY that are abroad with regard to the continuation of this line, and the first is that tlxose who are advocating the carrying on of the work of construction after it reaches Clyde are opposed to the other lines of railway now in course of construction. But that is not the case. They simply consider that the Central Line has a greater claim upon the attention of the Government than some of the other lines have. For while the residents of Gatlins district have the line to within a reasonable distance on the Owaka side, those beyond that township can either reach the railway coming from Invercargill to Waimahaika, or they can avail themselves of the steamer that calls at Fortrose, and so they are now able to get their
produce, etc. to the markets of Dunedin and Invercargill. The residents of the Roxburgh district, too, are in even a better position, inasmuch as they are able at present to get their produce to Dunedin via the Lawrence line. But with us the case is quite different, for the settlers at Makarora, Glen Dhu, Mt. Barker, Hawea, and Tarras have no outlet for their produce. Until the railway is opened at least to Cromwell it is impossible for them to send, profitably, produce to their only market—viz., Dunedin. While much more could be, and would be, produced in these parts than is now the case if there was a reasonable prospect of a ready sale for it. The settlers have opened up the country, and have bravely worked on, many of them for upwards of twentyfive years, and now that there is some prospect of more than a bare existence for them and their families, we think it Avould be, to say the least, most unjust that they should be kept any longer than is necessary from the realisation of their reasonable hopes.
