Dredging and Mining.
We are informed by a gentlemen who passed through Cardrona last week that the Lone Star has got to work again after undergoing a thorough overhaul. The Sunbeam's prospects are improving. In hydraulic mining, Mr W. Little is doing well, being on a good face of rough wash. The once tamed Criffel Face is likely to come to the front again, a strong syndi« cate having taken up ground there and cleaned out the races preparatory to a clear stait in spring. Lafranchi's dredge is working steadily, and should be on good payable ground ahoi tly. Mr O. McQeorge late of the Punt dredge has been appointed engineer of the First Chance dredge. The river is going down steadily, and will soon be low enough to allow all tho Gorge Fleet working. The Clutha River dredge lost a lot of time last week repairing, cfco. Mr M. Murray is again taking command of the Riley Beach, and will be in search of a crew shortly. Mr John Holden, winchman of the Rising Cun, has been appoimed m.ster of Alpine 2. He has got his crew together and made a start repairing this morning. Dredging operations will probably be commenced in a fortnight We hate no doubt that under his management the company can look forward to the ground being well teat 'd, and that many dividends are yet in store for the ahar holders. The Hartley and Rilay did not waeh up l»tt week. Alpine CVnsol has got the that load of their buckets on the claim. In the course of a week they should all be up as they are now lying at Omakau, The following district candidates were successful in passing for dredgemastur's certificates :—Measia C. D. Brent, H. E. Orkney, V. Morris. J. A. McGriunis, J. A. Bruce, B. M. Vickerman, of Cromwell ; C. O. Markman, Lowburn Ferry ; T. Oraand, J. Hoag, Nevis; C. J Banning, J. Patterson, of Clyde ; J. F. Sawyer, D. Livingstone, A. M. Weai, P. McGinnis, H. Olsen, J. McLaren, W. S. McCallum, A. Taylor, W. R. Roberts, Alexandra South. The dredgeraaster of the Rising Sun repot 100 hours, and worked ahead Bis feet. Time was lost putting on new angle corners on top tumbler, and closing up sparge pipe, which Was pulled down on Tuesday night. This accounts for the small return. Prospects continue the same, and the bottom is still sandy clay.' Junction 3 has now reached her claim.
