AUSTRALIAN GEMS.

Many descriptions of gems and gem-stones have been discovered in various parts of the Australian States, but systematic search has been made principally for the diamond and the “ noble opal.” Diamonds are found in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and in South Australia, but only in the first named State have any attempts been made to work the diamond drifts. <

The finest opal is obtained at Whitecliffs. near Wilcania, New South Wales. and there are about 750 miners on the field. Other gemstones, including the sapphire, emerald, ruby, opal, amethyst, garnet, and cairngorm, have been found in the gold and tin bearing drifts and river gravels in the numerous localities in the States, but most abundantly in Victoria.
