CONCERT AT KAWARAU GORGE.
The usually quiet nook with its cluster of houses called the Gorge was quite a scene of excitement on Friday, 9th inst., that being the evening of a concert held in the school. Mr James Ritchie acted as chairman and introduced the performers to the audience. The room was filled and everybody enjoyed themselves immensely. A piano duet by Misses Kitto and Graham, which was well played, began the proceedings. Mrs Betts, a favorite Cromwell singer, sang “Lockhart” and “The Bonnie Irish Lass” in first class style, having to repeat a verse of the latter. Mr John M,‘Elligott sang the comic song “ I didn t know till afterwards ” in a manner that caused great laughter, Mr W. Ritchie sang “Serving them all alike,” and “ The Frenchman ” very successfully. Mr Hedley’s rendering of “Our Jack’s come Home to-day ” was much appreciated. Messrs E. and J. Kitto, in character, sang “Little Brown Jug.” Mr J. Tait caused great amusement by his two parodies, one of “The Wearing of the Green,” and one of “Coming through the Rye ” Miss M'Elligott sang “ Gome Birdie, Come,” and has a sweet voice that suited the song well. Mr Betts gave some selections on the concertina Mr J. Kitto sang a very laughable character song “ Shabby Genteelj” and another comic “The Cross-eyed Mule.” Mr Moyes gave an amusing parody on “ Building Castles in the Air,” and as an encere “ Ellerie ” A very pretty quartette “ Won’t you buy my pretty Flowers,” by Misses Hansen, Kitto and M'Elligott (2), brought the concert part of the programme to an end. The various singers were accompanied on the piano by and Misses Kitto and Graham, and by Messrs Kitto, Lett* and Hedley.
Dancing was begun after the concert and kept up with great vigor to the excellent music supplied by Messrs Betts, Hedley, Partridge, M'Elligott and Ritchie. Mr J. L. Scott catered in a style that met with great approval. The committee desire us to thank all those who assisted to make the concert so successfuh
