FOOTBALL NOTES.
[By “Goal Post.”] At a recent meeting of the U.C.F.C. Committee, it'was decided to enter a team for the Tournament at Alexandra on the 21th inst. Mr G. Stumbles was elected delegate to the meeting in re the formation of a Union for Central Otago, and instructions wete given him. The players who are likely to bo picked for the tournament team are particularly requested to get themselves into form, as , - *it is condition that, in many cases, decides a game of seven a-side. It is not yet decided whether the team will consist of four forwards and three backs or of four backs and three forwards. As to the question of forming a union for Central Otago, my opinion is that geographical reasons are greatly against such a proposal. The goldfields contain clubs enough and players enough to form a healthy and vigorous union, that in matches with other unions could put into the held a team of good individual players, but wanting in that cohesion of the parts and that knowledge of each other’s play that, under the conditions of modern play, are essential to the success of a team. The clubs at the opposite ends of the territory under the rule of the proposed union would hardly ever bo able to meet each other. The completion of the Otago Central Railway to Clyde would make the formation of such a union more advisable and more practicable than it is at present. If, however, the union is formed, it will bo the duty of the’ goldfields’ clubs to support it faithfully and energetically,
Theso columns Jseldom contain an account of the doings of the 8.F.0. 1 would bo greatly obliged if some member of the 8.F.0. would send me, care Argus, short weekly accounts of tho practices of the 8.F.0., and the business transacted at the various committee meetings. When tho U.C.F.O. has a few notes nearly every week, one feels as though the neighboring club, which has quite as much call on the space allotted to this column as the local club, wore not very woll treated in being left, out in tho cold. Now, some Bannockburn scribe, just rectify this sad state of affairs. The Upper Clutha Club had a good practice on Saturday last, tho game being exceptionally fast. It is their intention, in view of the tournament at Alexandra on 24th May, to hold two practices a week—at Lowborn on Wednesday, and Cromwell on Saturday. Players should take note of this and roll up.
