BANNOCKBURN NOTES.

[FROM OUR OWN OORBKSPON DKNT.I A meeting of all interested in the construction of a sludge channel up Smith’s Creek, was held in the hall last week. Mr M''George surveyed it and found he could only get an average grade of about 1 in 36, so* the meeting resolved to try and get another survey a shorter distance but a tunnel all the way. Messrs Parcell, M'Gregoc and Aitken were appointed a committee. Very little work has been done for the past month, M'Gregor’s being the only race bringing in water for sale. Ball andPatterson have kept their race iu through all the frost and have been in steady work. The dredge is finished and ready to start work. May it succeed and have several mates shortly is the general wish. Is it not a wonder that there are not more parties taking advantage of the aid to prospecting granted by Government. There is a good field on the Carrick Range for several parties, and also at Bendigo. I have no doubt whatever, but that if a well directed effort was made to drive an adit iu the Young Australian a good reef would be got. Edwards aud Williams spent all their money in trying to sink a shaft, and they knew the ground; all it wants is a little energy and a little money. Could we ..not get a party from the Uunediu A association to come up and give it a trial. Then there is the “ Old Reliance ” at Bendigo, la years gone by X have heard there was a good reef there,, ic only wanted a party of men to' start, get a small battery* - and •there was a splendid thing tor them. We* don’t seem to have so much push as formerly. A concert was held on Wednesday last, the proceeds for the school, when there was only a poor attendance, must of them keeping back for the “ Pirates of Penzance.” The dance afterwards was well patronised.
