The New Diphtheria Cure.
Dr lOr.son, who was in charge of the diphtheria case successfully treated at Auckland with anti toxin, states that the attack was of a very virulent character, the membrane covering the whole back of the throat, also the nasal passage. The lymphatic glands all round the throat to the back of the neck wore not only inflamed, but the patient was also suffering from albuminuria. A dose of Behrings antitoxin was injected, followed by a second within six hours. After twelve hours there was no effect at all to bo noticed upon the membrane, nor was there any physical reaction the same as in tuberculin, The first constitutional effect noticed was the subsidence, within twelve hours, of all the inflammation of the lymphatics, followed in another twelve hours by the shedding of the membrane from the various portions where it was secreted. A third injection was given to the patient, who is now on fair road to recovery. There is no doubt in Dr Krson’s mind that, if the life has not been saved through its instrumentality, certainly the effects following the injection showed it to be really an anti-toxin—-that is, it destroyed the germ of the disease in the system. That is conclusively proved by the fact that the injection did not attack the membrane itself, but atfectcd tbc germ in the system, which was followed by the shedding of the membrane from the throat.—A'cto Zealand Times.
