The criminal sittings were commenced to-day, when true bills were found in all cases. Richard Hoggie, 19, was sentenced to six months for burglary ; Richard Hodgetts, two years for larceny ; H. S. Harris, one month for larceny ; Arthur Batchelor, three months also for larceny. Eugene Desarthe, John Hayes, and John Austin were found guilty for housebreaking, and sentence deferred. Mary Keesun, for keeping a disorderly house, 14 days. The Otago Central Railway League decided to make another effort through the members of Parliament to get the tunnel beyond Hyde commenced without further delay.
The Grand Lodge of Good Templars, after considering the new Licensing Bill, decided to object to the proposed licensing committees, and to abolishing the cumulative vote.
Tawhiao, the Maori King, died yesterday. A great tangi is being held. Rev. Father Lundouar, of Kelson, died this morning of consumption. The death is announced of Mrs Burton, of Lower Hutt, who lias been in the Colony for 77 years, having arrived with her father, Kev. Mr Butler, when she was one year of age.
