LAKE DISTRICT RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
*. A large number of Volunteers from Queenstown, Arrow and Cromwell were present at the meeting in the Arrow Council Hall on Monday evening, 25th May, for the purpose of forming a Rifle Association ; and on the motion of Lieut. Jolly (Cromwell), Capt. Jenkins (Arrow) was voted to the chair. Captain Jenkins asked Sergt.-Major Scully to read the minutes of a former meeting held for the ' present purpose at Victoria Bridge, Kawarau, in ISS2. Sergt.-Major Scully having complied with the request, it was shown that nearly all the officers of the Lake Volunteer District were present, and then agreed to form a Rifle Association, the first to be at Cromwell, the second at Queenstown, and the third at Arrowtown. This matter having been discussed, it was considered that as nothing moie had been done for so long a period the old resolutions should lapse and proceedings commenced de novo from this date. Proposed by Lieut. Jolly (Cromwell)— That an Association be formed, to be called " The Lakes District Rifle Association." —Carried. Proposed by Corp. Gilmour (Queenstown), seconded by Sergt. Graham (Cromwell)—" That the locality for competition be between Victoria Bridge and the Nevis Bluff."—Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Jolly (Cromwell), seconded by Corp. Salmond (Queenstown) — " That the annual fee for membership be 10s, and a subscription list be opened at once." — Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Stoddart, seconded by Corp. Meuzies (Cromwell) —"That the annual fee for civilian membership be 10s, excepting always that this fee does not admit them to team matches."—Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Jolly, seconded by Lieut. Mehaffey (Queenstown) and carried —" That Capt. Brown (Commanding District) be President, and Captains Jenkins and Wilmot be Vice-Presidents of the Association." Proposed by Lieut. Jolly, seconded by Lieut. Healey—"That Sergt.-Major Scully be appointed Secretary and Treasurer of the Association at an honorarium of £5 a year, and if the Association becomes a success, the amount to be supplemented."—Carried. Thirty-six members were here enrolled as the nucleus of the Association. It was unanimously resolved that cards of membership be printed and issued as from 25th May. Proposed by Lieut. Stoddart, seconded by Corp. Salmond—" That the Committee of the Association shall consist of twelve members, five to form a quorum, and that the following members be the first Committee, namely :—Lieuts. Healey, Jolly, Dewar, Mehaffey, and Stoddart, Color-Sergt. Crabbe (Cromwell), Corp. Gilmour, Vol. Anderson (Cromwell), Vol. L. Gibson; the President and Vice-Presidents to be members ex officio, " —Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Healey, seconded by Sergt. Graham (Cromwell) —"That the first meeting of the Association be held on the 9th ■November, 1885." —Carried. Proposed by Vol. Aitken, seconded by Corp. Salmond—" That each of the three District Companies be asked to subscribe £5 per annum to the funds, and that such subscription shall include the entrance fee for one team match from each Company at each meeting."— Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Stoddart, seconded by 8.5.-M Morgan—" That the rules of the Otago Association be adopted by the Committee, with power to alter them so as to make them suitable for the purposes of the Association."— Carried. A vote of thanks to the Chair closed the proceedings of the general meeting. COMMITTEE MEETING. Immediately after the general meeting there was a meeting of the Committee held at the Royal Oak Hotel. Present Captain W. Jenkins, A. R.; Lieut. D. A. Jolly, C.R.;Lieut. J. F. Healey, A. R.; Lieut. J. Mehaffey, M. B.; Lieut. G. Stoddart, A.R.; Corp. T. Gilmour, M. B.; Vol. Anderson, C. R. Proposed by Lieut. Jolly, that the Bank of New Zealand, Queenstown, be the Association's bankers. That cheques be signed by the President or Vice-Presidents ; either of the signatures of the President or Vice-President to be sufficient.—Carried. Proposed by Vol. Anderson, seconded by Corp. Gilmour—" That the President of the Association be requested to communicate with the Defence Department, with a view of securing tents and tent equipage for the accommodation of the three adult corps of the Lake District."— Carried. Proposed by Lieut Jolly, and seconded by Lieut. Healey—"That the secretary be instructed to get printed one hundred members'
tickets, for issue to members of the Association who have paid their annual fee of 10s." — Carried. , Proposed by Vol. Anderson, seconded by Lieut.' Stoddart—" That a sub-committee be appointed a Range Committee to deal with the whole question of range, targets, etc. ; subcommittee to be composed of the following : Capt. E. H. Wilmot, Lieut. Healey, Corp. T. Gilmour, and Vol. Anderson."—Carried. Proposed by Corp. Gilmour, seconded by Lieut. Healey—" That Capt. Brown (President of the Association), Lieut. Jolly and Vol. Anderson, be requested to wait as a deputation upon Mr Cowan, manager of Kawarau Station, for his permission that tlie rifle range of the Association may be on that part of the run situate between the Nevis Bluff and Victoria Bridge."— Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Jolly, seconded by Lieut. Healey—" That when the proper time arrives tenders be called for the privilege of keeping a canteen on the Association grounds. The successful tenderer for the canteen to supply meals to members of the Association at Is 6d per meal, the highest or any tender not necessarily accepted."—Carried. Proposed by Lieut. Healey, seconded by Lieut. Stoddart—" That the secretary be authorised to purchase the necessary books."— A vote of thanks to the Chair terminated the proceedings.
