Welcome Jack has been largely backed in Sydney to win the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 3. There was a falling off in the duty collected on spirits in New Zealand for the last financial year of £25,746. Mr Hayter, the Victorian Government statist, has just issued the following estimate of the populations of the Australasian colonies at end of year 1884 :—Victoria, 961,276 ; New South Wales, 921,129; Queensland, 309,600; South Australia, 311,954; Western Australia, 32,950; Tasmania, 130,541 , New Zealand, 564,304. The entire colonial population thus shows a grand total of 3,231,762, being an increase of 139,875 over the preceding year. In •New Zealand the increase for the year was 23,427. We notice by the shipping reports the arrival of the Union Co.’s ships Tekapo and Taihui, bringing some Forty Cases of Winter Drapery for W. Talboys, London House, Cromwell. The shipments consist of all the newest fabrics in Dress Materials, Jackets, and Shawls, Blankets, Flannels, and Shirting, Men’s and Youth’s Clothing, Drawers, Shirts, Hats, and Boots, Waterproof Coats (guaranteed), also an assortment of goods for the shilling table which will be revived. W. Talboys’ being a cash buyer direct from the manufacturers is able to defy competition by selling at the Dunedin wholesale prices. A visit will convince the Eurchaser that to buy from W.
