The following is the full list of appointments to the Legislative Council :—Captain Morris (Tauranga), Mr J. Shepherd (Nelson), Mr S. E. Shrimski(Oamaru), Mr R. Pharazyn(Wanganui), Mr Launcelot Walker (Canterbury), Mr John gathcate (Ofcago), Mr William Swansou (Auckland )T and Mr.H. K. Taiaroa (Otago). The following are the acceptances for the Great Autumn Handicap :—Sou'wester, Bst 3lb; Trenton, Bst 21b ; Lady Emma, Bst ; Rubina, Bst ; Nelson, Bsfc ; Administrator, 7st 111b ; July, 7st 101b ; Taiaroa, 7st 51b ; Waipiti, 6sb 131b ; Captain Webster, 6st 91b ; Lady Evelyn, 6st. The Ruapehu arrived to-day .from London. She brings a full mail and a good number of passengers. A deputation is to wait on Sir J. Vogel tomorrow regarding the defence of Dunedin, The followingtelegrams concerning the outlook are from Wellington to-day :—The Government have made application to the authorities in charge of the Australian squadron for a man-of-war to be stationed in New Zealand waters. The Hon. the Defence Minister does not consider there is a probability of war breaking out. The firm stand taken by the English Government, he thinks, will deter the Russians from crossing the frontier. The Government are, however, taking all measures in their power to have a proper defence, and it is probable that should war be declared the first-class militia will be called out. A meeting of the Imperial army and navy officers and members of the Government will be held to-day to. discuss question of defence. His Excellency the Governor will preside, and amongst those present will be Major Eccles, Major Cautley, Colonel Reader, Commander Edwin, R. N., Commander Home, R. N., and Commander Hewitt, R. N.
