YOUTHS’ CRICKET MATCH.
A cricket match between members of the juvenile clubs of Clyde and Alexandra (amalgamated) against Cromwell, was played here on Saturday afternoon, the challenge emanating from the visitors. In the result the Cromwellians sustained a very hollow defeat, not being able to make any stand against their antagonists. The visitors displayed a rare turn at the game in every department. The bowling of G. Robertson and Simmonds (Alexandra) was very destructive, while the fielding generally of the Clyde lads was excellent, evidencing a large amount of practice together. Whether or not it was that some of the Cromwell team had been up too'late the previous evening to be in good trim, certain it is that they were in no respect able to play against the visitors, who held them cheap almost from the start. The home team played nine in number and the visitors ten. The first innings of Cromwell came to a speedy close for 16 runs. The southern youths then went to the wickets, and were not got rid of until 150 was placed to their credit. The loose play of the Cromwell lads is clearly apparent in the fact that they allowed no less than 40 for extras. In their second innings the home team scored 35—being thus defeated by an innings and 105 runs. We believe it is intended to play the return match at Clyde on Good Friday. Our youthful cricketers will have to go in for a course of steady practice if they hope to wipe out the very sorry beating of Saturday. It is clear that without earnest application in the field, the Cromwell youths cannot hold their own against Clyde and Alexandra, so they will have to make the best of the time at their disposal. The scoring was as under :
