Cromwell Argus. AND NORTHERN GOLD-FIELDS GAZETTE. Cromwell: Tuesday, February 8, 1881.
The extension of the Otago Central Railway is again becoming a burning public question throughout the interior, and our telegrams indicate that the Dunedin Press has awakened to the necessity for pushing the work forward. To Mr Pyke is dne in some measure the credit of this renewed zeal. His .motion In the County Council to have .the..capabilities of the country through which the line will pass reported upon by competent and disinterested authorities, has met with, acceptance from all the kindred local bodies Affected, and th 9 public may therefore shortly look for some substantial results of their united action. Mr John Bathgate is spoken of authoritatively as having agreed to. make one of the Commission, and Mr Donald Reid is spoken of as another. Could his services be secured, we think Mr Thomas Fergus would be a valuable addition to the Commission. He has a thorough knowledge of the country, and besides possesses .qualifications that specially recommend him for such duties As the Commission will undertake. A report from the three gentlemen we have named could not fail to carry weight with the Government and Parliament, and-we have not the least doubt that their testimony would go a long way to demolish the false statements put forth by that sham Royal Commission of whicht-Mr John Reid was a bright and shining light. We are glad to see no time is being lost in giving practical effect to the suggestion emanating from this County, and we look for good results accruing.
