DUNEDIN.

Monday Evening, 7.

At a meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club on Saturday evening it was decided that, from the year 1879 the Dunedin Derby shall be abolished, arrangement having been come to with Canterbury Jockey Club by which the Derby is to be called the New Zealand Derby, of 250 sovs., added to a sweepstake of 20 sovs. each, and shall be run annually at the Christchurch Spring meeting. In return for this the Canterbury St. Leger is to be done away with, and the New Zealand St. Leger, also of 250 sovs., added to a sweepstake of 20 sovs. each, will be run annually at the Dunedin Autumn Meeting in March. Notification of dates on which the County elections shall be held will be published in next Gazette.

Dr. Moran, Roman Catholic Bishop, returned to Dunedin from Victoria yesterday. The Hon. W. Fox and lady are passengers by the mail-boat Zealandia. Mr Bright, the eminent lecturer, arrived in town yesterday, per s.s. Otago, and commences a series of lectures shortly. The San Francisco mails arrived at Auckland yesterday morning perR.M.S.S. Zealandia. She sailed south at 5 p.m. EUROPEAN NEWS. The Home News of 19th October gives the following summary of the Eastern position : How serious the situation is considered by the English Government may be judged from the facts that a special Cabinet Council has been summoned for this afternoon ; that the Government have called upon Lloyds to supply instantly a list of steamers capable of carrying troops, also contingent contracts which will be entered into ; that Lord Napier, of Magdala, has been told to hold himself in readiness to proceed to Egypt; that three army corps are being got ready to despatch to the Mediterranean ; that special plans for the defence of Constantinople, prepared by the Engineers, have been forwarded to the fleet in Besika Bay. The British Arctic Expedition under Capt. Nares, comprising the steamers Alert and Discovery, has returned. Progress to the North Pole was found impracticable. Capt. Nares reports that no land could be discovered to the northward of the highest latitude reached, namely, 83 20. CABLE MESSAGES. Sydney, December 4. A branch post and money order office was broken into this morning, and the manager strangled by the burglars, who carried away with them money and jewellery valued at several hundred pounds. The Belgrade correspondent of the Times states that in the country between Paratjin and Belgrade, and in the mountains near Fabchar, there are 11,444 women and children starving. The Alia of Bth November calculates the probable number of votes of the candidates for the Presidency of the United States as— Tilden, 194 ; Hayes, 175. Some American journals express confidence in Hayes. The party of " Demonstrationists " against the policy of the Government is gradually ceasing the agitation. The Times has completely changed its tone towards the anti-Turk demonstrationists, and supports the Government and condemns Gladstone.

Mr Vincent Pyke,' member for the district, will arrive in Cromwell on Friday evening. The Hon. C. C. Bo wen, Minister of Justice, will arrive in Cromwell on Wednesday. The hon. gentleman arrived at Queenstown on Friday night.

During the latter part of last week a robbery of 75 ounces of gold was reported by a party of miners at Kawarau Gorge. As the police are diligently on the alert it perhaps would be impolitic to say more at present. We understand that it is the intention of members of the Cromwell Lodge of Good Templars to have their annual Pic-nic and Concert on the 2nd day of the new year. No doubt particulars will soon be before the public. The annual meeting of subscribers to the local Athenaeum called for Wednesday evening last did not take place, owing to the poorness of attendance, owing to various un-looked-for causes. Members are invited to attend a meeting to-night, to be held in the Town Hall.

At last week's meeting of the Waste Lands Board the application of the Arrowtown Corporation for a grant of sections 8 and 9, Block XIX., for the purpose of erecting a powder magazine thereon was granted.

The Grey River Argus says :—Mr T. L. Shepherd has undertaken the role of a lecturer upon " Life Insurance in connection with Good Templarism." He gave his first lecture at Hokitika, on Wednesday evening last.

It may not he generally known that a most important industry is being quietly established in Otago, and one which we trust will prove successful. The Mataura paper mill is now in full work, and is turning out large quantities of very good paper. A portion of the machinery is working night and day. Our former townsman, Mr Thomas Logan, has become the owner of the race-horse Cloth of Gold. We are glad to note that Mr Lo<*an has met with better luck at Dunedin than he had at Christchurch with his promising colt, Dead Heat, who won the Maiden Plate and Railway Plate at the meeting held last week.

At the monthly inspection parade of the Volunteers on Tuesday last, Captain Brown presented the Dignan Medal to Volunteer Jeffrey, who was the highest scorer in last month's competition for the prize. During the present week the firing will be again gone through for the third time. Although little outward stir is manifested in connection with the projected Bazaar in aid of the Cromwell Presbyterian Church, we believe that many fair hands are busy at work, not only in our own locality but at a distance, with a desire to render the affair as attractive and successful as possible. We believe the Bazaar will be held during the Racedays.

An accident happened on Thursday night last to Mr C. O'Doanell, of Bendigo, which resulted in his being somewhat seriously hurt. He was driving home between nine and ten o'clock, and by some means managed to capsize down the steep terrace overlooking Mr Goodger's farm. He lay there till morning when he was picked up, brought into town and his injuries attended to by Dr Corse. We hear the injured man is now progressing favorably.

The programme of the Arrow district races and athletic sports has been issued. The value of prizes for the present year exceed those of any former occasion, and the various events make quite an attractive show. It is a pity the dates chosen clash with those of our own annual races, as it will probably deter some from visiting the Arr>w district. We observe that Mr Robert M'Kenzie has opened a Labour Mart and General Advertising and Commission Agency Office at No. 6 Royal Arcade, Dunedin. The labour mart will not be confined to Otago, but will be extended to the other Provinces, and will no doubt tend to equalise the rates of wages throughout the colony. We wish Mr M'Kenzie every success in his new enterprise.

On Saturday evening the members and friends of the Presbyterian Church at Arrowtown welcomed the Rev. Mr Will by a teameeting held in the Library-hall. The attendance was large and the gathering a most pleasant one. The hall was decorated with great taste, and looked really handsome. Of the tea-tables it is only necessary to say that they were loaded with the most tempting fare, as was proved by the way in which it disappeared. There was noticeable a high degree of friendly rivalry among the ladies in giving satisfaction to their patrons, and in this they succeeded to the utmost. We do not know the names of all the ladies who furnished and presided over tables, but amoug others we may mention the Misses Paterson, Pritchard, and Mesdames Mackay, Perrelle, Reid, Stratford, Dodd, Foord and Watson. After the hall had been cleared, addresses were delivered by the revs. Will and Ross and other gentlemen, interspersed with selections of sacred and secular music rendered in a superior manner by the powerful choir. Altogether, the evening passed very pleasantly, and added further testimony to the fact that the Arrowites are essentially sociable in their hospitalities.

"With his usual enterprising desire to meet the requirements of his patrons—and indeed of all who really want to get value for money—Mr W. Talboys, of the London House Drapery Establishment, has laid in a very large and superior stock of seasonable goods, exceeding even his former heavy purchases. Having been personally selected, the public may depend upon getting first-class articles at a lower rate than in any other house in Cromwell, as the advertiser possesses peculiar facilities for dispensing witli a large profit—all his purchases being for cash, his customers have the full benefit. Call and judi>e for yourselves.—W. Talboy's London Housa.— Advt.

Mr Arthur late Provincial Government Engineer, is appointed Chief Surveyor of the Provincial District of Otago.

No fewer than eleven cases of scarlet fever in Dunedin were reported to the local Board of Health one morning last week.
