A correspondent of the Lombardia, writing from Sara, states that a battallion of free troops is being formed at Belgrade under the name of " The Avengers." They wear a black cross on their breasts, and in vindication of the massacres in Bulgaria are bound to give no quarter to the Turks. One of the latest military inventions (says Public Opinion) has been to work heavy guns by steam. Experiments have been made with a 38-ton gun at Shoeburyness. It is mounted, loaded, sponged, and traversed by steam-power. The runner of the gun consists of a chain whose links are united by a sub-joint. The experiment, which is said to have been a great success, is to be tried in connection with the 81-ton gun. Reoentiy a little girl was frightened to death in Canterbury. A number of boys and girls, who were mostly children of the working class, were at play on the village green, ft would appear that a little girl, named Sarah Jarvis, naturally of a most timid disposition, was chosen as the victim of a practical joke. A mischievously-disposed lad, named Richard White, dressed himself up as a ghost, with a mask surmounted by a white skirt. Thus habited he waited at the corner of a lane through which Sarah Jarvis had to pass on her way home. As she approached he gave utterance to a hollow groan to attract her attention. The effect was electrical. The poor little girl sunk to the earth in a state of insensibility. The shock to the system was so great that she expired on the Monday following. The hog confines himself closely to routine work.
