UPPER NEVIS.

(from a correspondent.) November 28, 1876,

Mr E. A. Drnry addressed the electors of the Upper Nevis at O'Connell's hotel on Saturday evening, 25th Nov. There were between twenty and thirty persons present, and Mr W, Masters was elected to the chair. The chairman introduced Mr Drury to the meeting, and hoped they would give him a fair and impartial hearing. It behoved them to be careful and not to choose hastily, but try to put in the man who would study their interests in the County Council. Mr Drury then opened his address by saying he had much pleasure in meeting so numerous and orderly an assemblage-it was more than he had expected to meet, considering how small and scattered the population of the Upper Nevis was. He wanted nothing from them more than fair play, and no favor. He had heard there were certain prejudiced persons against him, but he hoped that after hearing him they would alter their opinions, and if they saw fit to elect him he would do all in his power to see their interests properly represented in the County Council. He was in favor of a road to either Kingston or Athol; also of a salary of £2OO a year to the Chairman of the County, but nothing for members. After a slight criticism on Mr Pyke, and an insight into how the revenue would be expended under the County system, Mr Drury wound up a very able speech of two and ahalf hours' duration—which occupied the closest attention of the meeting—with saying he would not occupy their time any longer, though there were many subjects he would like to touch upon ; but he intended to meet them again before the polling-day, when he would express himself more fully on the Counties Act, &c,

After a few questions asked by Mr Wm. O'Connell and Mr W. Dolan, which I believe were answered satisfactorily, a vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and the meeting duly closed. I must say that it was as orderly a meeting as I ever had the pleasure of attending.
