CARDRONA RACES.

The annual race meeting was held on Friday and Saturday, 15th and 16th instants and was in every wav a success The weather was delightful, and the’absence of dust, notwithstanding an agreeable breeze, created an enjoyable feeling, after hiving endured race-meetings at Clyde and GromJ,' , 6 k (>ofc h was attended to by Mr M-Orath, of the Golden Age Hotel, and armeared to be liberally patronised. Notwithstanding the absence of police, it-is a pleasure to record the fact that during the two days racing there was not even the semblance of quarrelling or misconduct, and all present appeared to thoroughly, enjoy the annual reunion. There was, as may be imagined, a large preponderance of the Mongolian element ip attendance, and “John” occasionally tried his, luck at some of the games to the extent of a shilling, -causing much merriment by his change of facial expression as the fates favored him or otherwise. The Germanjßand was in attendance, and was much admired, hut apparently not very liberally paid, as they “ struck” on the second day. The Stewards were indefatigable in attention to their several duties The following are the results of the various events

.... .First Day. Mmoej* Plate, of £7 10s. One mile. Weight for age. £ aka - - - (Waddell) 1 Fanny .. (Potter) 2 Detractor 1 ... ... (O. Fraser) 3 Detractor led all the way round, but when within 50 yards of home crossed Kaka, unintentionally, yet sufficiently to cause the (Stewards to declare it foul, and to give first place as above-noted.

Handicap Mile Heats, of £lO, ° hde - ... (Waddell) 1 Jasper..'. n ■ 2 There was a splendid race for the first heat, but Jasper, in coming home, rushed among the crowd, and consequently the second heat was a walk-over for Clyde. Jasper when bolting struck Mr Lafranchi violently, and it was feared he was seriously hurt, as he was for some time 'in a state of unconsciousness, but happily his injuries although severe are not serious. Newtown Handicap of £lO, with a sweep of one sov. to go to second horse. l.t mile. Young Leamington (Waddell) 1 Idle Girl■ ! ... ... (Fraser) 2 • aUarat ... ... (Ballantvne) 3 Five started for this race, and although it was looked upon as a “ moral” for Learnington, his backers felt very uneasy at the finish, the handicap proving an excellent one.

Hack Race, of £5. Garryowen ..... , r . ... . j Jerry, Jasper, and Kaka also ran, coming home in the ordei named. : ."

This concluded the first day’s programme, and a handicap foot-race of 200 yards for £2 was announced, which brought some six or seven competitors to the contest. This event was won by young Master Pearce, who had a start of 20. yards given him.

Second Day : Saturday, District Handicap. Lady Pembroke .... Ballarat ... ... ... ;! 2 Black Bess ... .. ... £ Garryowen also went to the post, but making a false ran a short distance off the course, and fell in crossing some boggy or broken ground, throwing his rider dell) heavily and getting away. The race had consequently to be run without him. Cardrona Handicap, of £2O, Distance, two miles.

Cbde Clyde walked over for this event, to the vexation naturally of the backers of Leamington, the latter, with Idle Girl, being scratched. It appeared upon enquiry that Waddell, the owner of Leamington, would not allow any stranger to ride his horse, and he was incapacitated by reason of his accident in the preceding race. Much discontent was expressed, and it certainly was unsatisfactory in the extreme. Whatever show of reason there was for scratching Learnington, there did not appear to be any for treating Idle Girl to a similar display of the white feather, as she could certainly hold her ground with Clyde. Shorts, of £5. Idle Gir! 3 1 I Clyde ! 3 2 Lady Pembroke 2 2Selltng Racb. Lady Pembroke ... ... .. j Detractor " 2 The winner was sold by auction for £2O ss, thus giving £5 5s to the funds. Consolation, of £7. Ballarat ... j Jerry " 2 A Hospital Race, won by Lady Pembroke brought the meeting to a conclusion. The various hotels appeared to fully appreciate the visitors from distant parts, and no effort was spared to provide them with amusement. The St. Vincent Company performed each evening at Lafranchi’s hotel, and were fa’ -Iv patronised. 3

Mr T. Fergus, District Engineer, is now engaged iu surveying the Pipeclay Sludge Chanllfc.lt
