KAKA POINT.

ASSISTANCE FROM COUNTY COUNCIL. BT.JILDTN'GS TO >BE SHIFTED. At the meeting of the Clutha Couuty Council on Friday several matters concerning Kaka I'oint and district were discussed and action agreed upon. Mr Simon Wright waited upon the council as representing the Kaka Point AWdfaie society and asked that the council subsidise the nimount collected by the society to widen the road from Mr 'Black's enrshed to Bates' corner. The society asked the council to grant a subsidy of £ for £. There were some buildings on the road line at Marine Terrace, and the society asked that instructions be given that' these be removed. There were also some fences ■ near the sea, and the society asked that they be taken down.

Mr I'. Htewart, secretary, Kaka I'oint Welfare Society, wrote drawing attention to the fact Chat theTC are two buildings erected on 'Marine Terrace, Wilshcr Township. One building is situated where a large number of fiiis are parked, an<l where a large number of visitors picnic, and the view of the beach is Obstructed. Last year the overflow from the house, was accommodated in tents. The Welfare Society propose "erecting two and they think it desira'ble that 'both parties Whould have immediate notice to remo\ r e the building. A deputation would wait upon the council.

Counciilor iVorth said the society had Riven groat assistance to the council, and he thought the council should co-operate with the society, ilt moved that the council agree to subsidise £ for £ the amount spent by the society in widening tIK? road, and that the engineer and memtier for the riding be authorised to co-operate with the society in having the work carried out.

Mr Wright said he would personally guarantee any payment on behalf of the society. Councillor Xorfn said with regard to the buildings on the terrace that he did not like to be hard on any person, but it would be fair to everyone if nobody was allowed to build on the roadline. He moved that the engineer take the necessary steps to have these buildings and all fences removed.

This 'was carried unanimously, and Mr Wright thanked the council and withdrew.

Alex. Ti'lson, Kaka Point, wrote that the council put clay on a road leading past iMeKechnie's store toward* the Hon. 1). T. 'Fleming's house. This stopped the creek, and diverted it from its old bed. The water Avas now going over his section. If the council supplied pipes he would assist in putting them in right through his sections to the beach.—Left to member for the riding and engineer.

XUOGET bat: James Murray awl 14 other ratepayers of Wilsher and Nugget Bay forwarded a petition requesting that the ■whole of their rates Ibe spent on tie road from Karwo Creek to the- oil store, as that road was in a deplorable condition, ft is one of the oldest roads in the county, and nothing of any consequence had been spent on it for the past 40 years. Ha'if of it 'was made 'by Nature, and it is the only part that is safe on which to pass a motor car or 'other vehicle with safety. The petitioners trusted that the new council. . with fresli blood in it, would give them a square deal. ■Messrs J. Murray, K. -Campbell and .1. 'Meiinpll waited upon-the council on 'behalf of the petitioners, and the three of them pleaded with the council for assistance. They explained that the road was originally made to cart stores to the lighthouse, ft was partly on the lieaeli, and when the tide was in there was no road. In some places it was very dangerous, and at times could not be used, and the residents were isolated. They asked that their rates for one year be spent on the road, and that two very bad places be attended to first. At one time there were about 12 fishermen at work in the locality, but no one could cart on the road, so the men were unable to get their fish to . market and had to stop. They had tried to get a Government grant, but had failed.

Councillor Xorth expressed sympathy with the petition, and he moved that the engineer- (be instructed' to effect some repairs in the worst places, and that the county use its best efforts to get a Government grant. He understood the /Minister of Potolic Works would be in the district in January, and he would endeavour to get Mm to visit the road. This motion was agreed to.
