At the Stratford election inquiry one witness who acted as scrutineer in the official count after the election said he saw quite a • number of counterfoils without a number and without any other mark to indicate whether they were soldiers' votes or declaration votes. There were 41 cases of persons struck off as voting at two booths, and it was in the search for these cases that he saw the counterfoils. There were four cases of proved void voting, and these votes were disallowed. There were some ballot papers without the stamp. He also saw the alleged identification mark on four ballot papers. Frostick, chairman of directors of the Kaiapoi Woollen (Mill Company, after an interview with Mr Mas■sey, states that the present position was that the mills, were to have all the wool they needed for this season's operations. There must be no accumulations beyond the usual average of pre-war times, which was very small. While the quantity of wool would be available, the price to be paid beyond a certain point had not been decided. Mr Frostick added that it was quite clear that the cost of the raw material to the woollen mills bad advanced considerably. The Jfew Zealand public, he was convinced, was not aware of the favourable position in which it stood in regard to the cost- of production of all articles made from wool. The product of the New Zealand mills probably could be disposed of on the markets of the Old 'Country at ,'ifl to 50 per cent. advance on the prices the mills now charged in New Zealand.
